Love & Basketball Movie ReviewLove-and-Basketball.jpg

Love and Basketball, directed by Gina Prince-Bythwood, is a drama, romance, and sport filled, PG-13 movie.  It is rated PG-13 for sexuality and language content.  It was released on April 21, 2000.

This movie begins when Monica Wright (Sanaa Lathan) meets a boy, Quincy (Omar Epps) in L.A. at the age of 11.  They are both strong-hearted to play in the NBA when they grow older.  Monica and Quincy have a love-hate relationship.  One day they would be the best of friends, and the next, act like they can’t stand the sight of one another.  As high school ends, and college begins, Monica and Quincy begin to date.  Within about a year of college, Quincy and his father get into many arguments and that leads to him having struggles in his relationship with Monica.  Sadly, what seemed to be a happy couple break up.  Years went by and the two never spoke to each other.  Later on down the road, when both of their pro basketball careers were blazing, Quincy and Monica crossed paths.  Talking brought back several memories from their childhood and they had to play one last one-on-one basketball game with a deal that could only be decided by one winner and one loser.

This movie was a great movie all around.  It shows how difficult it can be to balance sports, school, and a home life.  I would tell anyone who plays a sport, especially basketball, to see this movie.  The movie is mostly from Monica’s perspective, but I like how the movie touches on both sides of their stories.

I would give Love and Basketball a rating of a 4 out of 5 stars.  The director could have evenly distributed screen time a little more, but overall I wouldn’t change anything in this movie.

Reflection

I choose to write a review on this movie because it is one of my favorite movies.  It’s not just your typical sports movie; it has a storyline behind it.  I gave the movie a great review because anyone who is interested in basketball should see this movie; they will fall in love with it.
